Is your company prepared for OSHA's  new crane and derrick standard due to go in affect November 8, 2010?

Midwest Contractor Safety and Supply, LLC ("Midwest") is a distributor of safety related equipment for several of the largest safety equipment manufacturers in the United States. In addition, Midwest provides comprehensive training for rigging and crane applications. Our staff members currently vote on the ANSI A10 Construction and Demolition and American Society of Mechanical Engineers B.30 committees.

Midwest is also the only safety consulting company listed on the NCCCO website to perform practical examinations for rigging and cranes in the State of Indiana. We believe in a “hands-on” practical application approach to safety. Many safety consultants use only visual presentations for training and as a result the students often fall short in practical on-the-job usage of the training. Midwest instructors will provide practical application training as well as up-to-date class room materials in order to provide the most comprehensive training available in the industry today. We have a staff of instructors and consultants that hold the CHST to CSP and most importantly, they ALL have construction building experience.

New Nevada and Missouri OSHA Training Requirements

Nevada Assembly Bill 148--Effective January 1, 2010 all supervisors and employees working on construction sites must complete an OSHA 10 Hour or OSHA 30 Hour training course no later than 15 working days beyond their hire date.  Supervisors are required to have the OSHA 30 Hour course certification. All other employees are required to have the OSHA 10 Hour course certification.  In addition, Nevada Assembly Bill 148 will only recognize OSHA 10 Hour and OSHA 30 Hour cards issued within the past 5 years. Any certification completed beyond 5 years will be considered expired.  Compliance failure can result in escalating fines ranging from $500 for the first violation to $70,000 for willful violation. The third and subsequent violations are considered willful violations under the new regulation.

OSHA Required Rigging and Signal Person Qualifications

Under the new 1926.1428 standard, employers are to "qualify" any employee who engage in voice or hand signals.  The standard also requires persons performing rigging tasks such as making connections, hooking, unhooking or guiding loads be "qualified" to perform such tasks.  The standard requires the signal person/rigger to be tested oral/written and practical testing.
